I'd have done it to you already, but your name shows over 500 results in a people search, so no-one's going to find you unless you make it easier. I finally created a Facebook and a Bebo because other people have invited me onto them but I couldn't figure out how to add any friends on Facebook (even the ones who invited me!) without first giving it my email passwords which I'm not prepared to do! I lose at Facebook :)

Cheers for the clarification wendell -- I'll add a note to that effect. Do you find keeping a blog can be a driver for improving literacy skills? It seems like a no-brainer (everyone my age was told to keep diaries, after all) but I'd be interested in knowing any specific helps/problems you've found.

Y!360 does not work well with Flickr (though it always seems hopeful at first). It's widget poor as well. But I still like it. It's a semi-gated community which serves one of my purposes (a tool for supporting adults working on their basic literacy and computer skills - like you and me, I guess). Whether it's private or under-used is a question. It has the nice same-log-in spillover that gives users access to other Y! tools like notepad, briefcase, etc. There's a little bit of hacking/customizing you can do (though Y! prefers EI to Firefox). Not a bad blog & photo posting, social networking tool... though obviously plowed under by Facebook's popularity.

I never got Geocities to work - something about their java(?) tools and my Win98 on dial-up.

Well, to be fair, because there's not any one specific thing to do in SL, no actual goal, it can take a while before you find something you really want to continue with. Some people instantly get it and think it's wonderful; other people never see the point.

It's quite possible to look at it briefly though, with the proviso that it's really vast... oh, and you need a fairly good machine as well. But if you ever fancy a look, drop me a line, fridgemagnet at livejournal dot com works.

I was just wondering, reading about Habbo Hotel and that, whether you were going to look at Second Life? Admittedly the main grid is 18+ (supposedly) but there is a "teen grid", and I know a few educational types who are very into it.

I say this because I've spent bloody ages in the thing and if you want any information or anything on it I can deliver. I try to keep up with developments in the "virtual worlds" thing in general, really, I'm trying to move out of my crappy job to do that sort of thing full-time.

For what it worth and from where I'm sitting, and some other qualifiers, if you're wanting a full bells and whistles blog Wordpress seems to be the leader. MT is aiming more a business blogging and feels a bit cludgy as a tool these days.

For someone who just wants to blog, Blogger seems to be on a bit of a resurgence, not that it ever went away. I just set up a blogger blog for the first time in years and it was a breeze. I've often noted that those non-techy blogs that seem to get attention tend to be on Blogspot with standard templates and I think that's quite telling - the words are the thing, not the platform. Blogger is good for getting words out there in a clear and structured way with no mess. It's also very easy to set up group blogs.

LJ still seems to be leader if you want community. There's a lot of noise about MySpace but I can't see anything sustainable coming from that. LJ is very personal though - I wouldn't recommend it for a blog on a specific subject.

Interestingly the offerings from Yahoo and Microsoft don't seem to be getting any traction. Vox is very hip but it seems to be more for families and close knit groups of friends than wider blogging. I'm still undecided about what it's really for.

If someone asked me where to start blogging I'd say get thee to Blogger. Which oddly is what I would have said 6 years ago. Some things don't change.
